La formation pop rock alternatif, The Flaming Lips, naît en 1983 à Oklahoma City aux Etats-Unis, à l'initiative de Wayne Coyne. Ce dernier engage son frère Mark Coyne, Michael Ivins et Richard English. The Flaming Lips enregistre un premier album éponyme en 1985. Après cela, la composition du groupe se modifie quelque peu. Suivent les disques Hear It Is, Oh My Gawd!!, Telepathic Surgery, In A Priest Driven Ambulance, Transmissions From The Satellite Heart, Clouds Taste Metallic, Zaireeka, The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots et At War With The Mystics.
